STA vs MTA: What’s the Difference and Which One Is Right for You?
At BB Disability, we’re here to make it simple. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the differences between Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA), and help you figure out which option fits best.
Our goal is to deliver disability housing services that don’t just meet your needs but support your independence, confidence, and peace of mind.
What is STA?
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) is temporary housing support provided under the NDIS. It’s designed for short stays usually up to 14 days at a time.
STA can be used for:
- Giving carers a break (respite care)
- Trying new living environments
- Emergency accommodation
- Developing independent living skills
STA includes support staff, meals, activities, and accommodation. It’s ideal if you need a safe place to stay for a short time, or want to experience supported living in a new setting.
What is MTA?
Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) is designed for people who need a safe place to stay while they wait for their long-term housing solution. It usually covers stays up to 90 days.
You might be eligible for MTA if:
- You’re waiting for a SIL or SDA home to be ready
- You’re transitioning out of hospital or aged care
- You’re moving between homes due to changed circumstances
MTA provides support during these in-between times so you’re never without the care and stability you need.
